On January 9, the people of southern Sudan will likely choose independence from the north, and civilians are at great risk of a return to violence in their homeland. This ecumenical vigil on January 8 is one way to stand in solidarity with the Sudanese, who have suffered terribly at the hands of their own government. Another is to let our elected officials know that we and the world are watching, and expect them to do all they can to ensure a peaceful outcome.
